I have looked into camping options for Saturday night in Oberlin and found there are at least two local options and a third, not-so-close, option.
Just east of Oberlin is a small area called Sappa State Park. I could not find any info about this park on the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks web site, but an Oberlin resident advised me it did not have shower facilities.
I inquired with the Decatur County Fair Board and received the following reply:
"I hear you would like a place to park your trailer this weekend. We have RV parking at the fair grounds. It is $5.00 a day for electricity; $8.00 a day with no AC; $10.00 a day with water cooler; $12.00 a day with refrigerated air.
I will have a contract for you to fill out if you decide to stay. Let me know what you would like to do.
Thanks,
Linda Schroer
Decatur County Fair Board"
I asked if this was Sappa State Park and received the following:
"No this would be at the fair grounds where you will be racing. We have our own carnival, food stands, games, and rides. All run by volunteers. The parking is on the west side of the big parking area. You come in off Hwy 36 and go right, then turn on the last lane and down to the south. The parking is right there. Some one will be there to help you if you need it. Sappa Park is east of town. This will let you stay at the fair grounds and close to the restaurants. If you need anything else you can call me at 785-475-8111. This is my work phone.
Thanks,
Linda"
So...........feel free to contact Linda with any questions you may have.
The third option, which I am going to check into Saturday afternoon, is Prairie Dog State Park at Keith Sebelius Reservoir located about 20 miles east of Oberlin (near Norton). This appears to be the standard state park arrangement requiring vehicle permits and camping permits. Should you choose to stay in Oberlin and desire a shower Sunday morning, state park daily vehicle permits are about $4, are good for the day, and let you use the showers. If you need to kill a day, this might be the place.
From KDWP website:
Campsites at Prairie Dog include 2 Reservable cabin, 40 electric/water sites, 18 electric-only sites, and more than 130 primitive sites. Reservable sites are available. Shower and restroom facilities are conveniently located, as are two RV dump stations. A 1.4- mile nature trail complete with interpretive signage is a great way to explore the park and observe wildlife.
Historical interpretation is a hallmark of this park. Two vintage 19th century buildings are preserved here, including a one room school and renovated adobe house.
Sebelius Reservoir is well known for its excellent fishing opportunities. In recent years, anglers have found productive fishing for black bass, walleye, wiper, crappie, catfish and saugeye.
The 6,400-acre Norton Wildlife Area offers good prospects for pheasant, waterfowl and rabbits. Both whitetailed and mule deer can be found here, as well as a variety of furbearers.
