Hey Guys
I figured I would just let you all know how my first experience on the mile was. Well, to tell you the truth, it was amazing. I was quite nervous; but face it, who wouldn't be? So we ended up only getting 5 full laps of practice (3 and 2) and then it was right into the heats. The track finally laid down a nice grove by the end of practice, so it was time to get busy. I ended up getting 5 riders in my heat including me and only 2 transferred to the main. I got a pretty crappy takeoff, I ended up spinning a lot, really surprising since I weigh a lot... ;D But anyways I was last going into turn 1 and coming out of turn 2 you were either hammering down on the throttle or getting left in the dust, I decided the 1st one. By this time I was pretty far back to the rest of the field(that's what it seemed like to me) and then I finally figured out how to really keep the momentum going in the turns, and pretty soon I was right behind 4th place. I ended up passing 4th place (who was Kole King #55) and was right behind 3rd, but by this time our four lap heat was to an end and that was that. Dad clocked me in the heats going 40.1 second laps. Coming off of the track I was thinking to myself that I really had a shot at making it to the main. If only my shot wasn't destroyed by mother nature. In about 30 minutes (if even that) after my heat the wind started up and then of course it was raining, hard. So that was the end of my Du Quoin mile experience. But it was so amazing that if any of you have the chance of running a mile, I would highly recommend it. It's pretty much just wide open, turn left, tuck, and wide open again. The night before the mile race, I was talking to Jody Hale and he kept telling me how awesome it was, and I just kept thinking to myself is it really that awesome? Well it is, Jody even told me that night to have good dreams of the Du Quoin mile. I didn't have dreams about the mile, but it is definitely something good to dream about, that's for sure. And even though we got rained out, and it ended up being the same day as Clay Center, I would have still wanted to stay to race the mile. Now my sister on the other hand probably won't agree with me Anyways, I want to say thanks again to Aaron Lindfors, Dan Clarke, and Larry Kennedy for all the help and advice following up to the Amateur Nationals.
