Well it's official now. I ain't gonna make the races guys. I don't know whats wrong with this POS Honda but I been through everything about half a dozen times. The coil lead was completely separated yet she still ran. I got another coil (97 freakin' bucks) & guess what... Absolutely no damned difference. Still falls on her face & pops at WFO. Atleast I have a good Kawasaki to go murder the streets at warp speed on. Have fun ya'll. What is your plug reading say? So it otherwise runs fine except at WOT? You don't want to miss out on the KS fair races..

Plug is nice & brown. Yeah, she runs great at lower RPMs / gears. Like a frickin' tractor. The compression is almost 150 stone cold.

You are running stock Stator right? Good strong spark I am guessing. You put on a new coil, and i believe points at the beggining of the year. So check the timing and points, all wiring to make sure it is good. Compressions sounds good as well, that can almost eliminate mechanical timing.. you check the valve adjustment? We check our XL's after every race weekend. Next culprit which I think is the most likely to be causing your issue.. Carb, You running stock or an aftermarket? If aftermarket what size? Has the bike always done this or just recently? I am going to say it is a main jetting issue. My bike did the same ran awesome at low and mid range and crapped out at the top end, way too big of a jet in there.

Run better before warming up by chance? Try a new condensor.

Yes stock stator. New points & plug at the beginning of the season, both properly gapped, checked last night.
Valves were checked at the beginning of the season. I'm waiting for replacement o-rings to check them again.
I'm been thinking it's a fueling issue the whole time. Like she leans out. We checked for an intake leak around the boot. Found nothing. The carb (stockity stock) has been through through three times now.
That first race she ran splendidly.
Dan, the new coil has a new condenser on it.

Here's an idea... I always fine tune for air quality.....Overkill, OCD, you ask, possibly... But listen up. First race weekend, the air quality was pretty fat and happy. Now, out on them hot plains, your density altitude is probably 2500 feet higher.... What the hell is he talking about? You've got less air, a variable in this equation.... The constant, is your jets and needle position..... You're still getting the same amount of fuel.... but with a lot less air. "too rich".... If you've exhausted the electrical and mechanical possibilities... Lower the needle, or drop your main jet size by say 10 or 20. You'll know right away if you're headed in the right direction. If so, keep going till you're happy. On the contrary,,, If you believe it is going lean... Block off half of your air filter, duct tape, card board, dirty panties, anything that will restrict the air. That will give you a rich condition. Then head the direction you need to go.... My overall advice, ditch the stock ignition system, and carburetor, it will make your life better... I may or may not have accomplished much in the last few years,,,,But I've been to hell and back as far as tuning an XL350 goes.... Got scars, callouses, and trophies to show for it... I'll help any way I can Josh

By the way....
I just checked the weather at the Great Bend airport...
Density altitude.... 5,000
That's high considering your field elevation is 1,887
That means, your body and your engine are performing as though they were at 5,000 feet......
Lots less air,
Josh

Josh has a little bit of aclue what these XL's are all about.
