Since I'm new to this I'm hoping someone can help me out here.
Do my pegs have to be rubber coated AND folding? Mine fold, but aren't rubber coated.
Can I wear a MX style helmet? My road helmet would be kinda heavy to be bouncing down a track I think.
Just want to make sure I'm getting my ducks in a row. Thanks.

Your pegs should be rubber covered if you cannot get covered pegs some guys split rubber hose and safety wire it to the pegs. Hope this helps.....................Tom

The first bike I put on the track I used some old buddy pegs and ground the upper corners of the mounts off. (so they wouldn't stay up if folded up)
You can wear an mx helmet w/goggles, no problem. I wear mx stuff on the shorter tracks and leathers/full-face helmet on the longer tracks (or on shorttracks if its cold... lol).
How is the hunt for tires coming? Keep in mind that if you use a narrow front rim, a 27x7x19 might fit ok. The narrow rim pulls the tire in. If it barely rubs, you can trim the outer edge of the tread a bit. I had to do that originally, but it worked just fine. Might be worth a try...
Good luck!

My last biek I didnt run a rubber covered peg, but the rubber hose works well, I used good old duct tape and wrapped it around with the sticky side out. Helps keep that steel shoe on the peg. I use a regular metal peg on teh right side so my boot rubber grabs the peg.
You definatly want that left peg to fold and return back. Leaning into those corners you dont feel it sometimes but youll drag that peg.
I wear a regular street helmet and it does just fine. I prefer the full face to the MX helmet I used to wear. Some of those gusy ahead of you toss schrapnel at you. I had one sneak past my face guard and crack me in the nose once. Doesn't fell good at all. It's all personal preferance though.
One thing I need to start looking for is aset of leather for the larger tracks. Last time I raced the 1/2 mils at stockton I wore my regular gear, I felt fine with it since I wasn't going as fast as everyone else.
How are you on gearing? I have a few XL350 rear sprockets laying around from my bike. I'l lhave to dig in my nots but think it was a 15 front and 48 or 50 rear that I uses at Jeeps. Worked decent at 81 speedway too, just had to run in 4th instead of 3rd.

I was thinking the same thing, wrap the left peg in something for the shoe to 'stick' to & keep the right pegs as is. I wanted to make sure it'd be okay rule wise.
Haha, I doubt I'm going to be good enough to drag peg!
I've gotten a nice set of Vanson pants, very tough feeling. I'm looking for a jacket, might end up using a armored jersey of mine with a shirt over it to keep the dirt out until then.
All I've got right now is stock gearing. 15 / 45 I believe. I'd like to run in top gear 'cause I hear the stock XL has a weak 3rd & 4th gear.. Unless that's a bad idea?

Well i've been running my bike that way since Ive started 3 years ago and havent been kicked out for it.. As for pants, I wear some Thor Motocross pants and I use an ICON textile jacket. I also recently invested in some knee brace/pads. A lot of guys wear regular armor with Motocross Jersies on the short track. I am not sure what Rear sprockets I have but I will bring them down with me to the races.

A 15 front? You guys and your big-bore bikes! My starts got better when I switched to a 12 tooth front... but the down side is that I'm shifting as I pass Randy in the starter circle... lol! I think I used 12-51 and raced in 3rd gear at Jeeps. Loving this nicer weather... been out on the old '73 Yam 250 in the pasture a little. Even snuck into the neighbor's pasture for some creek fun. Feels good to get the housecats off the bike and ride it for a change!

Thanks TSM!
12 / 51....! Good God man! Wheelies in top gear?
No doubt about the weather! I been bombing around on a KZ650/750 I built. My first frame off came out amazing!
Another question. What do I need to do to actually race? Do I just show up? Can I pick any number (long as no one else has it) or do I get assigned a number?

If your not an AMA member.. You should be as they help motorcycle racers and riders. If you are a member look at your AMA #, the last two digits would be a great number. (In the older days when you turned pro they assigned you that number) Now days you just pick.. So if you have a favorite number pick it... Worst case is you will have to put an X on your number plate if someone already has that number. If you know what class you will be in you could PM Cherrypicker and she will let you know if that number has been used recently. Don't pick 67 that's mine. LOL

Occasionally at the line... not on purpose. ;)Its the only way to get my 250 to stay even close to the 350 Hondas and Bultacos! Besides, I'm still trying to learn how to race and like to play with gearing. Ran 13/53 at first, but was boggy coming out of the corners, especially if the track was slick. The 12/51 feels better and pulls out of the corners better. Its an ultra-light flywheel 250 built to rev. I woke up last saturday around 7am, wife and kids still sleeping, slammed a cup of coffee, and quietly loaded up my old Yam 250 and headed for the Oakland riding area here in Topeka. Had a blast riding for about 2+ hours and got covered in mud. The down side: I'm still so sore I can barely walk! Came across the little mx track as I was getting ready to leave. 1973 suspension + a 1968 body + a dinky mx track + pants leg in the front sprocket= Sore body! The good kind of sore though... ;D

You know tucking in that pant leg might look funny, but it sure saves some hurt and having to buy new pants down the road.. There is a pretty good chance that I'm gonna be home for the late April race.. Definitely not making the Little Rock race..
