I have arrived! This is to announce I received a phone call today from #51g Rob Goodwin. He told me he was elected to make me the offer. I have received the much coveted and long sought sponsorship of Klienweber Racing with valuable assistance from LA Racing.
Fresh to Flat Track but quick of sight, I soon realized the value of a Klienweber Racing sponsorship. I observed this 70 + year man hauling and unloading bikes, changing gearing, fueling and airing tires, while his riders, he was fielding a team of three, sat in comfort in the shade.
"That is the way he likes it," his riders informed me.
As time went on I would study Ed's racers in an attempt to learn, sometimes only for an instant as they lapped me. Ed was also watching me; he would occasionally come over and offer a suggestion. I took advantage of this and his riders openness, friendliness and lack of concern about me as competition and learned as much as I could about the bikes, race lines, starts and gearing.
Finally the big day came! I won my first race in the region's Amateur 600 class, and what a race it was! Two thousand fans on their feet applauding, and they would not sit down. Six lead changes between three riders in eight laps on a half mile. Who was I racing against for the win? Ed Klienweber's racers!
Fans on their feet! Announcers interviewing me! Throngs of admirers around my bike! A finish ahead of the number one plate! Surely Ed will take notice and want me on his team?
No....but he did get busy working on a bigger motor.
Several years pass, and Ed continues to share technical knowledge and advice and I continue to put in competitive performances against his riders. I have proved my worthiness, and have been rewarded! I will be attending the GPFTS race at Jeeps motorcycle club in Wichita, Kansas this weekend due to the support and assistance of Ed Klienweber of Klienweber Racing and Tom Laird of LA Racing.
Thanks guys, I will do my best to make you proud! ;D
